Asian Studies in Asia
Participation Scheme

This grant aims to provide assistance to scholars working on humanities/social sciences topics related to Asia who wish to attend humanities/social sciences conferences on Asian topics that are held within the region* and present papers at the conferences. It is financed from the Asian Studies in Asia Network's Ford Foundation grant and will meet successful applicants' travel and accomodation costs within the limits set out below.

Grant Terms

Open to scholars working on humanities/social sciences topics related to Asia who wish to attend humanities/social sciences conferences on Asian topics that are held within the region. Preference will be given to scholars under 40 years of age.

The grant will fund international airfares only (not domestic), accomodation, conference registration fee, airport tax, and a reasonable per diem allowance. It is the applicant's responsibility to investigate airfares and other fees and to present a workable budget.

Successful applicants are required to submit a copy of their conference paper for AsiaNet records.

Scholars must be

  1. based at** educational or research institutions within the region
  2. must have a letter from the conference of their choice confirming that their participation is feasible
  3. There will be four grant rounds. Applications close on 30 June 2001 for conferences up to 31 December 2001, 31 October 2001 for conferences held up to 30 June 2002, and 31 January 2002 for conferences held up to 31 December 2002.

    Please be aware that applications will not be considered unless they include all of the required information or if they exceed the specified page length.

    The Asian Studies in Asia Network retains the option to not allocate grants for a particular quarter and also to restrict the number of grants allocated if necessary.

    back** 'based at' defined as: holding an academic position in, or affiliated with the institution for the purposes of research (this includes postgraduate students).
